Food Waste and Loss Campaign

The Problem:

58%

Of all food produced in Canada is wasted each year

5 months

Every Canadian could be fed for 5 months with the food wasted annually

56.5 M Tonnes

of CO2 is generated by food waste

in Canada, with the majority of it ending up in landfills

#ThinkBeforeYouToss

It is estimated that over half of all food produced in Canada is lost or wasted each year. This loss increases food prices, contributes significantly to climate change, and reduces the resiliency and future capacity of our food system.

The United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 12.3 aims to cut global food waste in half. To achieve this, Champions 12.3 have created the format of target, measure, act.

Tackling the Problem

Target

To set progressive goals for reduction.

Measure

To track food waste and loss across the system.

Act

Take actions to ensure goals for reduction are met.

How It Works

Start by measuring food waste across the system including: Production, Post Harvest, Processing and Manufacturing, Distribution /Retail / HRI, and Consumption

Create a comprehensive plan to address food waste following the food waste prioritisation hierarchy

Set goals for the reduction of food waste, with an initial 10% reduction target by 2030
